Hey theater lovers, let’s talk about a gem of a show I recently had the pleasure of catching at the Diversionary Theatre in San Diego – “Head over Heels.” This musical isn’t just good, it’s one of the best I’ve seen in the city. In our current climate, filled with intense debates about identity and self-expression, this show is a breath of fresh air, striking just the right note for our times.
First off, the venue itself is a part of the show’s charm. It’s a cozy, intimate space that breaks down the barriers between the audience and the performers, allowing for a more profound connection with the characters and their stories. It’s a setup that enhances the entire theater-going experience.
Now, let’s talk about the cast. When I say ‘talented’, I mean they could probably sing the phone book and still get a standing ovation. While it’s tough to highlight any one performance in such a stellar ensemble, Joey Kirkpatrick deserves a special shoutout. His knack for comic timing and exceptional delivery had the audience in stitches, and his embodiment of the character was just top-notch.
Another star of the show was, interestingly, the lighting. It was undoubtedly some of the best uses of lighting I’ve seen in any production, making innovative use of traditional stage lighting combined with modern LED lighting strips. It wasn’t just illumination; it was an integral part of the storytelling, elevating the visual experience to another level.
The set design, too, deserves applause. Fun, vibrant, and whimsical, it perfectly echoed the playful tone set by the Go-Go’s music that underscores the show. It’s like stepping into a kaleidoscope of colors that continually dances and evolves with the story, creating an immersive visual spectacle.
“Head over Heels” is not just another show to add to your ‘maybe’ list; it’s a must-see. It’s a celebration of self, a riotous musical journey, and a testament to the power of love, acceptance, and fabulous Go-Go’s tunes.
And hey, before or after the show, don’t miss the cabaret space downstairs. It’s got a full bar, so you can grab a drink to enjoy during the performance or linger afterward to discuss your favorite moments from the show.
In a nutshell, “Head over Heels” at the Diversionary Theatre is a total knockout – a testament to the creativity, innovation, and vitality of San Diego’s theatre scene. If you’re around, be sure to grab a ticket and prepare for a truly unforgettable night. You can thank me later.
