As the curtain ascends on the first show of the season at the Moonlight Stage, the audience is greeted with a production of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s iconic “Jesus Christ Superstar” that is nothing short of divine. Strikingly staged and brilliantly performed, this interpretation of the classic musical is undeniably one of the most magnificent renditions the Moonlight Stage has ever produced.
From the moment Richard Bermudez steps onto the stage as Jesus, his overwhelming presence commands the auditorium. His vocals, as powerful as they are passionate, imbue the character with a raw emotional depth rarely seen in previous productions. Equally riveting is Brian Justin Crim’s Judas Iscariot. Crim’s complex portrayal showcases a vocal range that is breathtaking, making his character’s struggles palpable and heartrending. Both performances are exceptional examples of musical theatre talent and bring to life the eternal story with an unusual intensity.
The unimpeachable direction and vision of Steve Glaudini, Moonlight’s director and producing artistic director, elevate this production to new heights. His adaption marries the traditional essence of the narrative with a unique freshness, ensuring that the well-known tale resonates with the audience on a modern, relatable level.
Kevin Depinet’s scenic design plays a critical role in this visually immersive production. Depinet transports viewers from scene to scene seamlessly, creating an environment where the story unfolds in the most picturesque manner.
Yet, it is Blake McCarty’s projection design that truly ushers “Jesus Christ Superstar” into the modern age. His vivid, innovative visualizations offer an enhanced storytelling experience that not only complements but enhances the performance, providing an innovative framework for this timeless tale.
The leads, the ensemble, and the production team blend flawlessly, creating a synergy that captivates from start to finish. The entire cast and crew bring an energy and commitment that make this show a tour de force. From the opening overture to the closing curtain, this production of “Jesus Christ Superstar” at the Moonlight Stage is a captivating masterpiece. It’s an absolute must-see, a testament to the remarkable talent and dedication that makes the Moonlight Stage a beacon for exceptional theater. The message is clear – this is just the beginning, and what a splendid beginning it is!
