Today marks 10 years since “High School Musical” first made its debut on the Disney Channel setting many records along the way. The Disney Channel is marking the decade anniversary with a special on the Disney Channel.
The movie marked big ratings for the Disney Channel as it was seen by 7.7 million viewers in the United States when it made its debut back in 2006. When you look at the global numbers for the movie, it was even bigger as over 100 million ended up tuning in for the musical movie. These numbers at the time made it the highest rates Disney Channel telecast.
When you look at some other record breaking numbers from the little Disney Channel movie that could its pretty amazing. The movie marked the first TV movie to land in iTunes. Its soundtrack was the #1 selling album of 2006 and its original song “We’re All In This Together” broke into the Billboard Hott 100 chart.
The made for tv movie ended up launching the careers of Zac Efron, Vanessa Hudgens, Ashley Tisdale among others. It also spawned two sequels that in itself broke several records. High School Musical 2, broke records when it made its debut, becoming the most watched TV movie of all time with 17.3 million viewers. The third film was a theatrical release and ended up becoming the biggest opening day for a musical film a title it held until 2012, it grosses over $250 million dollars at the Box Office.
