“Memphis” at the Moonlight Stage is a Standout

Moonlight Stage Productions, who brings us hit shows summer after summer, take us to the 1950’s south in the opening season show “Memphis”. If you’re used to seeing their awesome productions, then you know you are in for a treat.

“Memphis” is based on real events and tells the story of a white radio DJ who wants to change the world and a black club singer waiting for her big break. Follow them on an extraordinary journey filled with laughter, soaring emotion, and rock ‘n’ roll that will raise the roof.

The show had its start right here in San Diego at the La Jolla Playhouse in 2009 where it had it’s first pre-broadway tryout before transitioning to New York City and Broadway. Once there it went on to win four 2010 Tony Awards, including best musical, best book and best score.

The show is filled with powerhouse R&B songs that make for a lively performance full of energy. At the forefront is Janaya Mahealani Jones as the leading lady whose soulful and electrifying voice carries across the amphitheater. Her stage presence is unmatched in the role of Felicia.

Her role when combined with the immense talents of Bryan Banville as the white southern disc jockey DJ Huey Calhoun makes for some magical moments. The oddball character at first might be jolting but as the musical progresses he becomes a very endearing part of this show.

“Memphis” is Jeffrey Polk’s debut at the Moonlight where he serves both as director and choreographer. A task that he accomplished with such skill. You can bet that he will be back directing another show at Moonlight soon.

The rest of the 26 member cast, orchestra, and crew complete the show. So many of the characters have some standout moments and when combined with the amazing music, set design, costumes, and talent of the actor bring a fun, exciting and at times emotional moving show to the Moonlight stage.
