It’s time to get on your feet! Moonlight Stage Productions’ retelling of Emilio and Gloria Estefan’s story, On Your Feet, opened in San Diego last week. I was fortunate enough to see it opening weekend and can say right out of the gate, see this production! You will be hard-pressed to find a better production than what Moonlight brings to their stage.
If you’re like me you’ve always wondered about the origin story of music greats like Gloria Estefan and her husband Emilio Estefan. The Story of Emilio & Gloria Estefan On Your Feet A New Musical, answers those questions and more.
Using many of Estefan’s greatest hits as the soundtrack, you’re sure to join others as they jump up and dance to the beat, or at least a little head bobbing for those sitting in front! On Your Feet! takes us on a journey with Emilio and Gloria from each of their their humble beginnings in Cuba all way through to their incredible career successes in America, including three Grammy Awards and over 200 million albums sold worldwide.
From perfect staging and choreography to spot on performances by each member of the cast, audiences will quickly forget they are watching a musical and feel as if they have stepped into another era, watching Gloria perform live and in person. Directed and choreographed by the same dynamic duo that brought the smash success of “In the Heights” to Moonlight, James Vásquez and Carlos Mendoza are back with another hit rendition. The on-stage brass and conga filled band under the baton of Lyndon Pugeda delivers a latin punch, a signature of Gloria Estefan and the Miami Sound Machine. A show like “On Your Feet” screams for concert-quality light shows, and veteran lighting designer Jean-Yves Tessier delivers some of his best work.
Ariella Kvashny (Gloria) makes her Moonlight debut, singing and dancing the night away, close your eyes and you might even think you were at an actual Gloria Estefan concert. Joining her on stage is Eduardo Enrikez (Emilio), a veteran of “On Your Feet” as San Diego audiences have the chance to see someone who was part of the original West End production in London. We can’t forget Crissy Guerrero as Gloria’s mother and Catalina Maynard as Gloria’s grandmother who each leave a mark on this production with their incredible voices. The rest of the ensemble are key to this shows success delivering dance number after dance number. Getting the audience pumped for the mega-mix finale that had audience members literally on their feet dancing in the aisles.
This is the last show of Moonlights 2021 season. Hurry and get your tickets before this one is gone.
