Moonlight Stage Productions’s production of A Chorus Line from start to finish is an absolute delight, showcasing some of the most enthusiastic, authentic and entertaining performances I’ve seen on the San Diego stage. From the aspirational and frenetic opening number to one of the most over-the-top final bows, this show had me on the edge of my seat the entire time. Its intimate look at the other side of theatre brought me back to the basic of why I love theatre so much.
In the midst of disruption and uncertainty, music provides light and hope. It brings people together in the pursuit of enjoyment – whether that pursuit takes place on a stage or in the streets. A Chorus Line is just what the doctor ordered.
The Pulitzer Prize- and Tony Award-winning “A Chorus Line,” set in New York City, centers around seventeen dancers auditioning for a part in a new Broadway show, where they put everything on the line for the opportunity to perform. The characters in the show have a range of personalities and quirks, which makes for so many interesting vignettes, some which pull at your heart and others that make you laugh, as they sing and dance through their various monologues.
The audience is first introduced to the dynamic and talented cast with the opening song “I Hope I Get It.” This scene of choreographed chaos brings the iconic musical to life in front of your eyes and ears, with Randy Rudolph’s skillful conducting. The music is upbeat and the choreography from director Hector Guerrero is truly great. It all looks so effortless when being done by the gifted group of dancers he has gathered.
One of the aspects of “A Chorus Line” I love is that it truly provides each cast member a moment to shine in the spotlight, and in this case, every performer is incredible!
Steven Ruvalcaba’s portrayal of Paul in this show was nothing short of outstanding. Not all that surprising, given that his monologue is touching from the minute he steps forward and begins to share his story. The emotions, tears, and heart-warming tale hit the audience in a way I haven’t seen in a long time.
Jennifer Knox as Cassie captivates the audience with her song and dance in “The Music and the Mirror.” When I saw this I kept thinking that each mirror represented a version of personality and picture view into her past. How she views herself (not a star), how her ex views her (above what’s she’s doing or trying to do) how her fans see her (a star) how the rest of the case sees her (a threat.) Not to be forgotten Milan Magna as Diana delivers a rousing performance of “What I Did for Love.”
There is something spellbinding about Moonlight Stage Productions’s production of A Chorus Line. The show is unlike any other, serving up a musical marathon that entertains and inspires in equal parts. A Chorus Line is a one-of-kind show that has been delighting audiences for generations now; if you have a chance to see it, do yourself a favor and go ahead—you won’t regret it! Whether you’re a fan of dance, musicals, or just want to enjoy a great show, I wholeheartedly recommend A Chorus Line.
